Coding sketches

Small sketches written in JavaScript, which translate the levels of white and black in images or videos, and map those values; to lines of different widths (left), and small images I assigned from lightest to darkest (right)

Paper Construction

A paper spiral (left) inspired by the combination of man made drills, and natural cacti forms, and Risograph prints (right) of photos of the spiral after being fed through my JavaScript sketch

Sony Walkman prints

A series of prints inspired by the Sony Walkman and the packaging of that era. I designed it digitally (left), before screen printing each of the colour layers onto paper (top right). I then did prints of the box nets after being constructed then crushed, by inking the box up and running it through a printing press (bottom right)
Typographic collages

A collograph print on the left inspired by old woodblock printing letters, and a hand drawn collage on the right using only the letter 'H'
Morse code typeface

A typeface I designed based on designing a visual representation for Morse code. Changing the dot and dash for a horizontal bar and curved line, and the curved line flips direction if following a 'dot' to show the order of arrangement
Shape-based typeface

A typeface designed using the same four shapes repeated in different orientations to create a uniform alphabet. I then created an animation of the alphabet moving across the screen and added effects in Premier Pro, before feeding the videos through the previous JavaScript sketch to add the 'line' effect

Crushed can

Lino prints (top left) and an animation (right) of a crushed Coke can, with an initial exploration into removing detail from famous branding and whether the product is still recognisable. I also used the JavaScript sketch I wrote to edit photos of the can, using sections of my can to be assigned to the black, dark grey, grey, and white values

Research

Double page spreads of research that have helped to influence and develop my work over the past few months. Karel Martens is currently one of the designers I am particularly influenced by, in particular, his book 'Patterns'
Product Deconstruction
Physical photo edits

A series of the same photograph edited differently using simple colours and shapes (left), and a hand made paper weave (right)
Abstract collages

Paper collages in black and white, and colour, based on previous collages using sheets of mark-making
3D shapes

Photographs of a strip of Correx that I folded into triangular shapes using a line bender, and placed on top of a light box to photograph. I chose Correx to work with as it allows some light to show through each panel and shows the depth of the design
Paper sequence

An A1 sheet of hand cut squares, which show movement within a series
3D Structure

Photographs of the development and outcomes of a group project, with an initial brief to create a 3D newspaper structure coming out of the wall as far as possible
Movement deconstructed
Box inside

These are photographs of the inside of a shoe box that I transformed, using paint and string, to reflect the feeling of 'calm'. The light comes through slits cut in the top and using a moving light source produced interesting results which I videoed.

Flight journey

A video of compiled footage from a camera on the underside of a plane, and the sounds of the plane at different points during flight

Hand made book and animation

Scans of pages from a book I made using my own screen prints. The screen prints are originally from drawings I produced of different album covers scrunched up, scanned and then enlarged to A3. The pages in this book are A5 sections cut out from the screen prints produced, bound together with a hand-stitched chain stitch. I also made a small animation using a screen print of the drawn album cover (Aphex Twin) scrunched up, then overlayed with prints from a tape spool being dragged across the screen

Listening calendar

This is a calendar I created using my streaming data from 2024. Each day is represented by a black square with white squares in randomised positions, representative of the hours in a day I listened to music. I used JavaScript to randomise positions of a fixed number of white squares within the black square.
